Luis de la calle

Luis de la Calle is CEO and founding partner of De la Calle, Madrazo, Mancera (CMM), where he is responsible for the administration and operation of the company, as well as providing clients with his understanding of the economy, regulatory processes and matters related to international trade.

Prior to his work in the private sector, Dr. de la Calle served as Undersecretary for International Trade Negotiations at the Mexican Ministry of the Economy, a position to which he was appointed by both former President Vicente Fox and former President Ernesto Zedillo. In this role, he spearheaded Mexico’s negotiations for bilateral free trade agreements and regional and multilateral negotiations at the World Trade Organization. In this capacity, he served as permanent advisor to Pemex Exploration and Production and the National Forestry Commission and as executive secretary of the National Foreign Investment Commission.

 

Before being appointed Undersecretary, Luis de la Calle was Minister for Commercial Affairs at the Embassy of Mexico in Washington, D.C., a position from which he played a fundamental role in the design, promotion and implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement, NAFTA.

Luis de la Calle also worked at the World Bank as Country Economist for the Czech and Slovak Republics and for Poland and the former Zaire.

Among many other organizations, Luis de la Calle is a member of the Institute of Public Council on Agriculture, Food, and Trade, the Mexican Council for International Affairs, and the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness. Currently, he is a member of the Board of Directors of Aeroméxico.

Dr. de la Calle lectures around the world on international trade, the Mexican economy, and other fields of academic research. He has extensive teaching experience. He has an extensive list of published articles and publishes his biweekly column “What else?” in the El Universal newspaper.

Luis de la Calle studied his bachelor’s degree in Economics at the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico, ITAM, and his master’s and doctorate in Economics at the University of Virginia.
